Our Latest Remodel - My Childhood Home
We just listed our latest remodel - my childhood home! All of our remodels are special to us, but this one is especially so. This is where my Dad has lived for the past 27 years and where I grew up. It has good bones, but hadn’t been updated since it was built in 1994 so it needed a total facelift. We are really happy with how it came out! As with all of our remodels, it’s a little bitter to sell it, but a lot sweet. We’re so excited for the next family to call it home and make great memories.
We started this project in August of 2020, one month after we had our son, Leo. We decided to finish off the space above the garage (what we refer to as the attic) first so that my Dad could move in there while we renovated the rest of the house. This was a first for us, having someone (besides us, ha!) live in one of our whole-home remodels as work was being done, and presented some new challenges for us to work around. Finishing the attic space took much longer than expected - with just having our first baby we moved slower than usual, plus with covid surging, there were delays with obtaining permits and general supply shortages. We also got pulled away with filming for Delta and other projects for family members. We finally finished in March of 2021. The finished attic space consists of a bedroom, a bathroom and walk-in closet, a laundry room, and a storage area.
Once we were done and it was time for my Dad to move into the attic space, he donated a ton of his furniture and put everything else in an apartment he leased, though he mostly stayed at the house in the attic. He didn’t mind the minimalist lifestyle of living in 1 bedroom, and felt good keeping an eye on the place for us on the days we couldn’t be there. It was also very handy having someone on-site almost 24/7 to receive packages and meet with subcontractors for those times we couldn’t easily be there.
We started demo on the rest of the house on April 1, 2021 and finished in mid-November 2021. The goal is always to go faster, but this is the biggest house we’ve ever remodeled to-date, so we are generally happy with the 7 months it took us to do the majority of the house.
I’ll do a blog post on each part of the house and what we changed - coming up first is the exterior!
